Will a code reader tell me which part to replace?
It tells you which circuit or system reported a problem, which is not the same thing. A code pointing at a catalytic converter can be caused by the converter itself, by an oxygen sensor lying about what it sees, or by an exhaust leak upstream drawing in air. The code narrows the search from the whole car to one subsystem, and that is its job. Tools that suggest likely causes are ranking probabilities from aggregate data, so treat the suggestion as the first thing to inspect rather than the parts order.
Does clearing the code fix anything?
No. Clearing erases the stored fault and turns off the lamp, but the condition that set it is untouched. If the fault is still present the light returns, sometimes within a single drive cycle and sometimes after several. Clearing is genuinely useful in two cases: confirming a repair worked, and checking whether a one-time event such as a loose gas cap has resolved. Clearing simply to hide the light also erases the freeze frame data a mechanic would have used.
Can I clear codes right before an emissions test?
You can, and it is usually the fastest way to fail. Clearing resets the readiness monitors to incomplete, and most programs refuse a vehicle with too many incomplete monitors regardless of whether the light is on. Those monitors only complete again after a specific pattern of driving that can take several days. Do these work on any car?
Any car sold in the United States from the 1996 model year on has the standard port, and the basic engine and emissions functions work across makes. Beyond that, coverage varies. Antilock brake and airbag systems are read through manufacturer specific protocols, so a tool that reaches them on one make may not on another. Some European and Asian models expose only part of the enhanced data to third party tools. Check the compatibility list for your make and model year rather than trusting the headline claim.
Is a handheld unit or a phone dongle better for a beginner?
A handheld unit asks less of you at the moment you need it: plug in, read, decide. A dongle gives a beginner more help understanding what the code means, since a phone screen can show a paragraph where a handheld shows a line. The deciding question is usually whether the car has one driver or several, and whether you want a tool that keeps working when the phone is dead or the signal is gone.
