That burning dust smell on the first run
A hot, dusty, slightly scorched smell for the first twenty to sixty minutes of the season is normal. Dust settles on the heat exchanger and the electric elements over the summer and burns off once they come up to temperature. Open a couple of windows, let it run, and it clears.
What is not normal: a sharp electrical or plastic smell, a burning smell that is still there after an hour or that returns days later, any smell of rotten eggs or sulfur, or soot marks around a vent. The safety rules are short and they are not optional. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, never into an extension cord or a power strip. Keep three feet of clear space on every side.
